Blackbeard looked around at those assembled on deck, one hand on his knife, the other on his gun. “Well?” he drawled. “Where is the Gentleman Pirate? Shouldn’t he greet his guests?”
“He’s wounded,” Lucius blurted, immediately cursing himself for being startled into answering. “He’s—he’s in his cabin.”
“Izzy, see to things here,” Blackbeard said, unsheathing his knife to wave it in an all encompassing gesture. Then he pointed it at Lucius. “Show me to the gentleman, then.”
Which was how Lucius found himself walking back down the passageway to the captain’s cabin, with Blackbeard right behind him, and the mantra of be-useful-don’t-get-stabbed-be-useful-don’t-get-stabbed on repeat in his head.
He reached the captain’s door and opened it, taking several large steps inside before pointing to the bed. “He’s unconscious,” Lucius babbled, as if Blackbeard couldn’t see that for himself.
Blackbeard crossed the room in measured strides, stopping before the alcove. He still had the knife in hand as he looked down at Stede.
This was it, Lucius thought. And all right, he had been down for the mutiny, but that was ages ago honestly, and he didn’t really want to see the captain killed anymore, especially not after all the trouble he’d just gone through to keep the man alive. But Lucius knew how things worked. You took a ship; you killed the captain. It was standard piracy.
Blackbeard sheathed the knife. Then he turned, taking a few steps to pick up one of the fine upholstered chairs. He plunked it down by the captain’s bed.
“Leave,” Blackbeard said.
